There are also things you can do to both prevent identity theft and to identify attempts to compromise your identity and privacy. Read the following for tips and information on the subject. As always, please feel free to contact us at any time and we'll be pleased to address your specific questions and concerns.
Identity Theft can occur both physically and electronically. It is important to recognize both so you can take steps to minimize opportunities for others to steal your personal information.
Phishing. These are emails that solicit your personal information. These emails may appear to be legitimate but are actually attempts to steal your identity. Remember, KeySource will never request your PIN number, password, or credit card number via email. Additionally you can install software that will help you identify these emails.
Spoofing. These are websites that are designed to look like a company's website but are actually attempts to steal your personal information. They are often arrived at by clicking on a phishing email or by typos in entering a website manually. For example, entering "www.keysourceban.com" leaving off the "k".
Trash Rummaging. Thieves can often find personal information in your trash from bank statements, credit card offers, or other sensitive correspondence that you may throw away.
Pretext Calls. Someone may call pretending to be a representative of a bank, another financial institution, government agency, or other official. Under false pretenses, they may ask you a series of questions, including seemlessly harmless questions, that get you to divulge certain sensitive, personal information.
Skimming. Sophisticated thieves can place equipment on credit card readers at places such as the gas pump. These devices are capable of scanning and retrieving your account numbers or PIN numbers directly from your card. They are difficult to spot, but they can be seen if attention is paid to the slot where your debit or credit card is inserted.
There are simple, everyday steps you can take to minimize your risk of identity theft. When followed, these tips also help you identify early on if you are a victim of identity theft. Early discovery will help resolve the issue far more quickly.
Never respond to an unsolicited or automated email asking for personal information. When in doubt, call a known phone number for your customer service representative to confirm that the information was actually and legitimately requested.
If someone calls you requesting personal information for any reason and you don't recognize that person, request that the person give you a number where you can call back or call back a trusted phone number that you have previously used.
Consistently review your bank and credit card statements. Report any discrepancies immediately.
Know your billing cycle. If any bills do not arrive close to the expected date, contact the vendor.
Do not write down or keep with you passwords or PIN numbers in unsecure places. Do not carry your PIN number in your wallet or purse.
Make use of online BillPay.
Bookmark the official KeySource Commercial Bank website to prevent any typos.
Do not throw away documents with sensitive or personal information. Shred these documents.
Always destroy or shred any expired or unwanted credit or debit cards.
Review your credit report periodically. You are entitled to a free credit report from each of the three major institutions each year. You can order this report through AnnualCreditReport.com.
